What Is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a medical condition where breathing stops for anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds while you’re asleep. Though snoring isn’t identical to sleep apnea, many patients with this disorder snore loudly throughout the night and occasionally make gasping or choking noises, often due to blockage in the airway that prevents regular breathing from occurring.
Along with snoring, the majority of sleep apnea patients experience extreme daytime fatigue that often leads to problems with concentration and memory. Other common symptoms include chronic headache and changes in mood.
If these symptoms are tied to sleep apnea, you could be at risk for a variety of serious health issues. When the body is regularly deprived of oxygen during sleep, it can increase the risk of complications such as:
- High blood pressure
- Heart attack
- Weight gain
Though it only occurs in rare cases, sleep apnea can cause respiratory failure during sleep, resulting in sudden death.
